After booking with who knows who I received confirmation and update that credit card funds had been put in hold. So far so good. Because of snow storm and power outages in the broome county area I drove from Ithaca to access family property for damage etc. After spending a full days cleaning yard and cutting down fallen tree we were ready to call it a night. When arrived at the desk to get room key and show ID. Standard everywhere. Mind you everyone was dressed very casually and nervous ( I could tell you why but let the readers figure it out)). I was then asked to produce valid ID from a friend who had spent the whole day helping me. Odd right? Of course didn’t have his ID and I was denied access. Clerk pointed to a typed notice that stated all guests must have valid ID. I’m guessing this is an in house thing since there were no logos or signatures from headquarters. We then drove to Endicott and to get some form of ID, mind you there is no power at the home. Finally locate Benefits card which contains standard information. Like most ID. Upon returning to Fred Roof Inn the first thing I encountered was all the doors locked? Young man buzzed me in, did a once over ID and promptly rejected Benefits card stating it was not valid ID. Never looked up, said hello. The only person speaking was the original counter person now sitting out of site behind the counter. Informing him that he shouldn’t accept ID. Still don’t know if he was an employee since he was very casually dressed and didn’t have a name tag. I have worked as VIP hotel desk employee for two casinos and recently retired after 7 amazing years as a Super Host with Airbnb 4.95 review standards from day one. I would never have treated guests the way we treated. Even when guests could be difficult (which I was not). Not an ounce of empathy, concern or willingness to step back and try to make us comfortable given the time and issue with no power. Due to cultural differences I’m used to being treated a certain kind of way and roll with it. However when I’ve asked about refund clerk stated “ we don’t deal with whoever you booked with, you have to contact them “ Needless to say I was shocked to receive this request for a review based on my last stay. Meaning employees did nothing in my reservation to indicate a problem and simply went along with the idea that I actually stayed the night. Just another dishonest act in a terrible experience. What I want to know is why there is zero indication on any site about this ID thing which is by the way a tactic companies use to discriminate against certain members of our community. (Poor man’s tax) There is no statement on website, on receipt, from the hotel room broker etc. So you wouldn’t know until you were at the desk that you needed ID. I sincerely hope you review this practice and come up with a better way of keeping people out of your establishment that you consider to be a problem. Dissatisfied Customer.
