"Reservations were poorly handled. End result was positive. Rating is based on reservations not Calla"
Overall Score1.0/ 5
We booked our rooms via the wedding website for a two night stay at the Callaway Resorts as part of the 'blocked rooms'. I booked immediately when I received the invitation back in September. I have never been to this resort and have no knowledge of the various lodging options but as part of a wedding group under 'blocked rooms', we were supposed to be in the Lodge. The room was booked as two queens with a view and I will repeat 'with a view'. The reservation email also noted that the room has connecting/adjoining rooms (to attempt to be next to another guest). We originally booked two rooms then decided to add Thursday night a week prior. The 800# service was obviously not local to the resort and I asked several times if they were part of Callaway and I was told yes they handled reservations for Callaway so I continued but did feel good about this service. Fast forward to Thursday. after driving from Ohio to the resort in pouring down rain, we found out we had reservations at the Mountain View Inn which is basically a motel a very dated motel. I was told at checkin that smoking is not allowed (which was not an issue for me anyway). So I get my keys and we proceed to walk to our room which was only accessible from the outside walkway just like a typical motel not a lodge. The room smelled of smoke. Absolutely no adjoining rooms and our view I think it was a wall or part of the parking lot. I guess having a window is a 'view'. It was decently clean but it was a motel and not the lodge which was supposed to be set up for the wedding block. I proceeded to go back to the desk and the clerk was not very friendly. She proceeded to get us a room at the lodge and gave me our keys which I thought was great initially. She also said she cancelled the room. At this point, I assume the originally booked rooms were cancelled (meaning refunded). As we drove to the lodge, I got a bad feeling about the transfer so my husband dropped me off at the front and I proceeded to the checkin to verify the reservation. I was no surprised to find out the clerk at the Inn had only booked us for that night not all three like we originally had. The clerks at the desk at the Lodge were quite helpful but it was very time consuming to get into a room that we could stay in for three days in a row. At no point did I see a Manager. We did get a room but it was an 'accessible' room and the shower was designed as such. The Callaway Lodge was very nice (esp after the Inn aka motel). Everyone we encountered was helpful. The breakfast was good although we were not offered a package at check in which may have been nice. We golfed on Friday and thoroughly enjoyed the course despite the chilly weather. The Tap Room at the Lodge was very nice and we enjoyed our server Lisa (there are two and both were good but we mostly had the red head Lisa). Ruby at breakfast was very kind and provided us to go coffees when I mentioned we were leaving to go golfing. The Discovery Center for the reception is beautiful. We also went to the Butterfly Center. DO NOT miss that. It was so wonderful. We were greeted by a wonderful woman who provided us some great information about the history of the place and butterfies. We would have stayed longer except we had that long drive back to Ohio. The Resort also had their Fantasy of Lights which we got to see part of going to the Reception. It was beautiful and I"m sure a wonderful experience. I do believe it's a great resort with lots of activities for everyone. My poor review rating is specific to a Resort providing blocked rooms to guests that are not handled through the Resort itself. I understand that the original event planner left at some point and a new one came in but that is no excuse to have a third party handle reservations, take reservations (and credit card information) for such a large resort that should be staffed to handle events. If you are going to use a third party such as weddingwire, you should not tell guests to go back and deal with them. I understand if it was me going through a third party site such as hotwire or one of those other booking sites that I would be responsible but I did it under the guidance of a planned event with blocked rooms. We were not the only ones shifted to the Inn/motel either. Luckily my credit card company is great about working with us to dispute and resolve charges so they are working to handle the early booked room charges as we were told by Callaway that they were not paid for the room by the third party because we didn't stay yet we still have the charges. That felt like they were washing their hands of the matter after I spent quite a bit of money at their resort. A wedding is a big event and should be handled much more professionally as these issues are not what the bride, the bride's mother or the bride's mother in law need to hear about or deal with the weekend of the wedding. IF I was only rating the Resort from the time we ended up in our room, it would have been a four or five (4 because I have a pretty high standard of cleanliness in a room and some of the room could have used some recent dusting like lamps, shelves in the armoire, etc. The coffee maker and another light didn't work and those things should be checked often). Be careful of booking rooms for a wedding if you are not directly connected to Callaway. As a side note, be sure to check our bill carefully. We did see some pending charges come through our notification app while on property and most were gone by the time we got home except for one and that went away after contacting Callaway about the room charges. That went away after the call which I found interesting.

"Great Wedding Venue"
Overall Score4.0/ 5
Stayed in Cottages, nice and comfortable, recently decorated. Low temperatures so cottage wasn't as warm as we'd like due to lack of insulation. But overall great time. Reception was at Discovery Center. Beautiful venue.

"Great and not so great."
Overall Score3.0/ 5
The staff was very nice throughout the property. I wan to especially recognize Ms. Wilene. As I was leaving the resort I saw the Villas and asked her if I could look at one in case I wanted a different kind of stay next time. She was so very kind and willing to tell me about the rooms. She went above and beyond. Please recognize her for that. My room had great beds and pillows. The biggest problem I had was some one had a dog that barked constantly. It woke me up and that's not what I wanted or deserved to hear on my vacation. It barked in the afternoon I was trying to read. It was very, very annoying. I love dogs I am a pet owner But I took my dog to a pet resort for his own fun time. I understand everyone is different. The other problem was I could hear the people on the other side of me talking and laughing both nights. So I had people on one side and a dog on the other side. The activities were great. But once I got to the room it was noisy.

"Mountain Creek Inn."
Overall Score4.0/ 5
When we walked in the room, the smell of chlorine bleach was overpowering. We left the door open and ran water in all the drains but the smell persisted. We checked in late so there was nothing else to be done. The next day I bought some air freshener, which helped temporarily but the smell never did dissipate. Otherwise, staff was friendly. We did enjoy the Gardens, visited the Butterfly Center and Discovery Center.
